MOIRA GREYLAND, Founder & Artistic Director of Inland Valley Opera
Moira sings and accompanies herself on the concert harp in seven languages and numerous native dialects. An award-winning Celtic singer with a range of nearly five octaves, she is equally at home singing a lead in an opera, playing harp for a wedding reception, or giving a variety concert of vocal and harp selections.
When Moira was four years old, her mother noticed she had perfect pitch and that she could sing back any tune perfectly on the first hearing, whether it was an operatic aria or the most elusive Gaelic folk song. Moira began memorizing Irish folk songs at the age of six and had amassed a repertoire of six hundred songs by the time she was fourteen.
She began memorizing operas at the age of ten, including Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte in German and Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance in English. She began vocal training at the unusually early age of fourteen and had learned a few hundred arias before she began college.
She created the role of Liriope in the world premiere Masumoto’s opera Echo and Narcissus. Her operatic roles include Lucy in The Telephone, Mrs. Ford in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Madame Goldentrill in The Impresario, The Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Adele and Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, Dido in Dido and Aeneas, Fiordiligi in Cosi fan Tutte, Gilda in Rigoletto, and Violetta in La Traviata.
Moira has performed for such notables as Dianne Feinstein and Hillary Clinton. She was invited to play the harp for the Queen of Thailand’s birthday and also to perform for Toni Braxton in Las Vegas. Moira appeared in the movie The 40-Year Old Virgin as the harpist in the wedding scene. Her harp concerts have taken her all over the world.
She earned a Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Redlands. While studying for her Master of Music, Moira studied composition and wrote original music for harp and voice. Her album, Avalon’s Daughter, has been well-reviewed and is available through iTunes and Amazon. Her original song cycle, Anthem for America, has been described by audiences as ‘deeply felt, passionate, and wrenching.’
Moira is available for all varieties of events, including weddings and parties. She is also an accomplished instructor of both harp and voice. Some professionals that Moira has trained include Catya Carothers, Mitch Landy, Destiny the Harpist, Lauren Arasim, Ruth Northrup, and Lorian Dunlop.
