The story explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hyatt, a struggling actress. The show uses a form of storytelling in which Cathy's story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage), and Jamie's is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple have first met).

This musical satirizes American society in 1958. The story was inspired by the phenomenon of popular singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the army. The rock star character's name, "Conrad Birdie," (word play on the name of Conway Twitty an Elvis rival) is off to do his duty for his country but not before his manager arranges a publicity stunt for 1 lucky young lady to win a date with him.
